Chevrolet Volt
The Chevrolet Volt, available in the UK from 2012 – 2015, is a five door hatchback powered by a centrally mounted lithium battery and 1.4l petrol engine (hence its marketing line of "Electric when you want it, gas when you need it") and has its origins in General Motors' EV-1 electric vehicle program. With a range of 40 miles on electricity alone (GM’s research showed that the majority of commuters travel less than this on a daily basis), you have likely already noticed some similarities between the information about the Chevrolet Volt and our page about the Vauxhall Ampera. This is not surprising as, badge aside, the two are practically identical!
The arrangement of the battery pack means that although there is considerable boot space, a rear seat has been sacrificed, making this a four seat vehicle. A high quality interior, featuring a touch screen console, from the higher end of the General Motors range, is perhaps only to be expected given that the Volt was available brand new at a price just under £35,000 and reports abound that General Motors lost money on every Volt sold!
